The My Fantastic Funeral app allows users to choose what songs they want played at their funeral and what photos they want displayed so they can email their wishes to friends and family.
The 99 cent app was developed by former Albury women Monica Bourke and Leigh O’Brien, both 41.
“Leigh and I were having a few drinks one night in Albury, we were listening to music and things like that and a song came on and I went, ‘Oh my God, this is my funeral song’,” Ms Bourke said.
“It went from there and I said if anything was to happen to me, don’t let my mum play something tragic.”
The app is available in eight countries.
“I think there’s a market because I think for most people, you hear a song and think ‘that’s my funeral song’. It crosses everyone’s mind,” Ms Bourke said.
Ms Bourke, a financial controller in Sydney, and Ms O’Brien, an office assistant in Perth, have been living away from the Border for about 10 years but regularly visit.
Ms Bourke, who wants Sarah Brightman’s Time to say goodbye played at her funeral, said laughs aside, planning your funeral was serious business.
“Death is one of those things that’s just going to happen,” she said.
